In Mrs. Bessey's Flex Reading group, students learned that poetry is a fun and creative way to express their thoughts and feelings using words. Some poems are serious, while others are funny. They learned how to write different types of poetry, like acrostics, couplets, all about me poems, diamante poems, free verse, rhyming, non-rhyming, color poems, -ing poems, haikus, and more. Mrs. Bessey read lots of poems aloud to the group, especially from Shel Silverstein, one of her favorite poets. She gathered about 30 poetry books from our school library for the kids to read through so they could find an author or style they really liked. In small groups, Mrs. Bessey then met with her students to read through poems so they could discuss their understanding. As a fun final project, the students wrote ten poems on their Poet-Ts, with at least three of the poems being their own original works. Thanks Mrs. Bessey, for the love of poetry!

In support of first grade’s baby animal unit, Ms. Michaud had a few special guests today for Farm Day. Thank you to our parent volunteers, staff helpers, and to Mr. James for stopping by with Hank and the chicks! The kids learned so much and had a ton of fun!
